  1. When will the new £1 coin be introduced?
The new UK £1 coin will enter circulation in March 2017, and The Royal Mint is producing more than 1.4 billion of the new coins.
  2. Why is the £1 coin being replaced?
The current £1 coin has been in circulation for over thirty years, which is much longer than the normal life cycle of a modern British coin. All high value coins need occasional redesign to keep one step ahead of the counterfeiters. Over time the current £1 coin has become increasingly vulnerable to counterfeiting; in more recent years there has also been a rise in the quality of counterfeits, and whilst law enforcement agencies are successfully cracking down on counterfeiting groups, the best long term solution is to introduce a new and highly secure coin, ending high costs to business and the taxpayer.
  3. Will the current and the new £1 be in circulation at the same time?
Yes, there will be a six-month period where the existing £1 and the new £1 coins will co-circulate.
  4. Will the existing £1 continue to be produced by The Royal Mint and be available to UK banks?
No, from March 2017, only new 12-sided £1 coins will be produced and issued to UK banks from The Royal Mint.
  5. When will the existing £1 be removed from circulation?
From the point of introducing the new £1 coin, the existing £1 coin will begin to be withdrawn from circulation.
  6. When will the legal tender status of the existing £1 be withdrawn?
Following the six-month co-circulation period, legal tender status of the existing £1 will be withdrawn.
  7. What action should I take in preparation for the new £1 being introduced?
In order to ensure that your machine is ready to accept the new £1 coin, you will need to decide if you want to agree to have the upgrade completed. This will either be an upgrade of your current mech or in where a very old mech is fitted a replacement mech may be required. We can complete the work on all your machines during a single visit.
  8. Will the Vending Machines accept both coins?
This can be easily completed at a time of your choosing when you decide you no longer want to handle the old coin – during or at the end of the transition period. Our engineer will show you what is required and leave you instructions.
  9. When/How do we switch off acceptance of the old coin.
This can be easily completed at a time of your choosing when you decide you no longer want to handle the old coin – during or at the end of the transition period. Our engineer will show you what is required and leave you instructions.

Make sure your machines are new-£1-coin ready.
